@ BBQ at Zürihorn, May 23rd

Au revoir nasty snow, au revoir invidious rain - summer has officially begun! Hence, we AIESECers concluded, a tasty get-together barbeque would certainly be a fun, but just as dignified manière to embrace the season. BBQ party, huh? And better than any eHow.com article could have ever explained, our dear IM Team demonstrated to us, what it took to get a great BBQ party going.

Their recipe in short:

A hint of atmosphere: Choose a super sunny Sunday like May 23rd was, choose a location by the waters like the Zürihorn, preferably provide the crowd with lush grass and shady trees. And you should be all set to go.

Culinary providing: No barbeque without meat, no barbeque without a grill! From candy to snacks, from salad to meat, no one went hungry. Sharing seemed to be an unuttered axiom. You saw everyone contributing to the big repas canadien.

A pinch of sportiness: Provide the people with some sports equipment. Not simply to burn off the just acquired calories (definitely a sensible reason though), but also to push social bonding in a fun way! People were playing frisbee to soccer. One or two even climbed trees or dared to jump into the cruelly cold water - at a temperature of a mere 12° degrees!

And the key ingredient: People - people, people, people! Not only were we amongst ZH @ members, but also current interns, other LC members, alumni and heck even non-AIESECers were present. My tip: mix well ;) And you shall experience what we did: good discussions, goofing around, meeting new faces and a lot of laughter!

Lastly, add a little spice: Organize a bar, slash, club trip after the BBQ! Our first stop was the Seebar in Enge. How nifty it was, that most people were able to catch a ride on the boat in order to cross the lake so conveniently. Enjoying talks and drinks again, it was a lovely fade out to the day. And the last (wo)men standing couldn't help but to continue the fun and went to shake it!

Now wasn't that a blast? Thank you dear IM team for that one-on-one culinary lesson. And we hope it shan't be the last!

SACC-Event

Interlaken, May 7^th

Early morning, four of our delegates made their way from urban city Zurich through
woods and steep, serpentine roads to the Bernese Oberland; arriving at the magnificent Victoria Jungfrau Hotel in Interlaken, Berne. Their task? Helping the Swiss-Asian Chamber of Commerce hosting their yearly forum, focussing on Swiss and international trade. Our fair share? Mingling, networking or simply chit-chatting with interesting and important people, connected to economy and politics.

Our day began with receiving guests; among which we were allowed to welcome people such as Gerold Bührer, president of economiesuisse; the day’s chairmen Dr. Daniel Hügli, chief editor of cash TV; or the former vice president of Nestlé: Thomas Schelling. They amongst others were holding speeches about the positioning of their businesses in international markets, and especially in what way they want to interact with foreign markets. Topics like swissness, eco-friendliness and sustainable trade were the day’s messages. With great interest and pleasure, did we attend these talks and discussions!

Worthy of note, were certainly Schelling’s words concerning the upcoming Asian markets. He emphasized how crucial it is to also aim for local prosperity and investing in people, when expanding to Asia. Just as well as Bührer’s warnings did not miss to leave a pensive frown on most faces. He did not mince matters and stated, how insecurity and growing social instability due to the EU’s current debt position, would be an impediment to Swiss growth for the following years.

After a last networking apéro, everyone was lead to the Hotel’s noble ball room, the “Salle de Versailles”. Certainly a dignified milieu for receiving Mrs. Doris Leuthard; member of our federal council, in charge of the Swiss national economy department. With delight and curiosity we lay our cameras aside for once, to listen to Leuthard’s well-prepared speech. That evening, it seemed she could not stress enough on the importance of the Swiss chambers of commerce; especially in times facing the consequences of the financial crisis in 2007. She stated that these chambers were our most competent advisors and were a valuable source of information. They would play an important factor in the preparation for the coming upturn. Very optimistic tones, nevertheless.

The night coming to an end, we found ourselves enjoying the Victoria Jungfrau’s charm a last time, while playing a round of pool with Frank Sinatra covers playing in the background. And latest on the way home, every single one of us had realized something. Realized that this was a lot more than we were expecting, a lot more than mere mingling and networking. We had met a variety of people, from Vietnamese consultants to the Ambassador of Pakistan. We learnt about global trade and how essential sustainable and societal measures are. We had the opportunity to listen to the speech of a Bundesrat, followed up by a meet and greet. Yes, we: Martin, Saskia, Simon and Mirella. We had a fantastic time and are ever so grateful to have made these and other great experiences!

Amazing Kick-Off 2010!

KickOff 2010 Swiss National Conference, Fiesch

From April 29^th to May 2^nd, 250 delegates from all over Switzerland and the world gathered in the Swiss mountains in Fiesch for 4 days of intense learning, connecting, sharing, and having fun.

And how was it? So amazing!

Here are some highlights that made it such a legendary conference!

· Many inspiring speakers, who gave us good advice, new skills and lots of motivation for our future.

· Getting to know a lot of amazing people from all over Switzerland! And of course most of all, bonding with our amazing LC Zurich!

· The Global village, where we had the world in one room! The many delicious specialities and the crazy games everyone brought to Fiesch were quite an experience.

· We must mention the chair's singing... :)

· When suddenly the whole cafeteria throws themselves onto the floor... Fortunately I was warned and told about it before, but I think many of the newies were quite confused. The better part is, that we were all joining them the second time it happened!

· The parties of course, in the AIESEC motto of “work hard, party harder”. But I must say the “ladies” at our first party “gender bender” looked the most splendid!

· And the last night, at the formal dinner, the moment was to come...

Here are some impressions from our delegates!

The one thing that impressed me the most in those amazing days of KICK-OFF 2010 was the astonishing spirit of cheerfulness and friendship among the participants. From the first moment of the conference to its very end, you could virtually feel the eagerness to interact and improve all around you. People were keen on discovering something new and to form an active part of this event in general. This “drive” not only made the excellent mood persistent even throughout the most exhausting hours, but it also assured the gained experiences to remain in our heads as vivid memories of a great time.

I was fascinated, astonished by the fact, that everything was done by everybody! If it was said to men: “You all have to change your clothes with girls” and the other way round – nobody rejected and everybody was similarly crazy at that party, and other as well.

It was quiet a shock when during the first party night some kind of strange music began to play. Everybody began to dance ONE DANCE! As if everybody apart from me knew how to do it! I was called in one of the row (which was really sweet of them) and I began to study, how to dance to the craziest, funniest and coolest song ever – Tunak Tunak Tun! =)))

It was really cool & funny! Now, when we meet in Zurich we have our common jokes, things, that only we do understand and laugh at. We are like-minded persons, we are cool, young and funny, we are friends, we are AIESECers. And thank you for all that! Thank you for being my new friends, and thank you for new emotions and experiences!

Greetings from Taiwan!

Greetings from Taiwan!

To give you an insight into my AIESEC experience, let me first give a short introduction for those who have no idea where and what Taiwan is:) Its an island next to China, where most of the people are chinese immigrants of the x generation. But there are also indigenous people who mainly live in the mountainous area of Taiwan. That's where I’m right now! I’m living in a township in the southern part of their country, which consists of four little villages of each around 100-200 people and is quite far away from the city. Unfortunately, there has been a serious typhoon last year and destroyed many of there houses, streets and their beautiful landscape, which attracted a lot of visitors before.

The NGO I work at is therefore dedicated to help the people in different ways, by providing (financial or material) support, providing some work opportunities, improving the children’s education and physical/psychological condition. So far, it has been a quite interesting experience to live here and get to know the people and their lifestyle in the countryside. The villages here a very small, so within 10 minutes walking you have basically seen it. You cannot just go around the corner and buy some things you need or anything other than just some snacks and drinks at some little store. It takes at least 1 hour by car and through bumpy roads to the next small town and more than 2 hours to the city, consequently you don’t spend a lot of money:). The EB 2010/11 started its term

Right before officially starting the term, the EB 2010/11 of LC Zurich was completed by Sereina Pfister.

Hi, my name is Sereina Pfister and I am your new VP ER. Ok, not so fast: here some facts first: I am 21 , one of 4 children and I am studying political sciences at the University of Zurich. I spent most of my childhood abroad due to my father's job with Swissair. During those 12 years abroad, I was in the French school and only changed to Swiss gymnasium when we got back to Switzerland. After school, I tried one year of Law, but found out pretty quickly that it wasn't at all my way to be. So I choose to follow my elder brother and study political sciences. He was the one who introduced my to @. At first I wasn't very interested, but I found out soon enough that it was exactly what I needed and what I missed at University. To be part of a world where young people come together to talk, have fun and learn, through workshops, internships and much more was maybe secretly what I wanted University to be. I joined @ in october 09. I never thought about applying for the position of VP ER. After the first election, when the position was still vacant, Anne-Sophie talked to me and forced me into the idea. :D Now that I have been elected, I believe it to be a kind of fate thing. It had to be this way. I am very exited about my new position. Communication and selling are two things I love to do. I will have to opportunity to invest a lot of time in new ideas and new projects. In the first place, my job will be to put some structure and some motivation into the ER-Team, as there were some problems in the last term. After that, the job will be to raise Interships (TN's), to find sponsors and to keep up the communication with the outer world, which would be everything that isn't @. I am looking forward to working with all of you and I hope that we will achieve our goals together.

Anne-Sophie Chiarello - LCP 10/11

So who is this newly elected LCP of yours? Well, some facts first: my name is Anne-Sophie Chiarello, and I was born in Basel, did my first years of schooling there and then spent my 10th year travelling around Australia with my mother. Upon our return I attended a boarding school near Rapperswil led by monstrous nuns (just kidding). Five years later I decided I had had enough of this gloomy place called Switzerland and headed for my first year of exchange in Beijing, China, where I attended a Chinese high school and lived with a local family for a year. I decided to stay, found myself a place in the German Embassy School, an apartment, a room mate and a job and embarked on my new life there. This was the time I first had contact with @ers and well, their unique way of dealing with a new culture.
Now I‘m studying law in my third semester and although people tend of that as such a boring subject I highly disagree. If anyone wants to take up the conversation here, you know where to find me ;-)
As you might have heard, I joined @ during October 09 and so have not much @-experience to offer. „Do it“ was an amazingly life changing experience, but then conferences seem to have a large impact on any newie.
It was there that my decision to run for an EB position turned into the certainty that I will attempt to run for LCP. The challenge seemed so great and the move very bold from my side, but I had nothing to lose. I believe the position of LCP to be a very demanding one, shouldering a lot of responsibility, seeking to get out the best in every member, take firm decisions and see them implemented, listen to our members and take a step back to follow their path and dreams.
Why did I do it? Because I am not easily scared of challenges. Because I believe I will learn more in the next year than probably in the five following. Because the message and motive of @ inspires me more than anything else has so far. Because I am happy to contribute to something bigger than myself and because I feel that I will make friends for life. As I've mentioned in my speech, I want the LC Zurich to be the best, stay the best and to keep improving through innovation and trusted leadership. This we can only do together and I am hoping that you know your importance as @-members, the foundation of @, the stones the walls of our house are made of. I‘m looking forward to the journey we are embarking on and I want to assure you of my loyalty to our LC Zürich. (Even if our Leo and Marmita are married now! Love conquers all but not rivalry between Geneva and Zurich! :D )

Albert Gubler - VPTM 10/11

My name is Albert Gubler, I'm 20 years old and I study Economics at the University of Zurich. I play a lot of football in my free time and am interested in a lot of sports in general. A ball is enough to keep me occupied for hours. I also enjoy movies, TV shows and books, as well as wasting time surfing the internet.

But if I was granted unlimited resources, I'd be travelling around the world. My AIESEC experience so far consists of being a member of the OGX team and taking part in their activities, such as organizing an induction event and raising awareness at the Activity Fair of the Federal Institute of Technology.

I was elected Vice President Talent Management, or as we call it VP TM. My job will be to take care of the recruitment, the marketing and the development of the AIESEC members. I hope to continue the good work that has been done so far, but also improve the recruiting at the Federal Institute of Technology as well as in the faculties of the University where @ isn't well known yet. I'd like the LCMs to be insightful and entertaining, and a date all members look forward to.

I really enjoy being a part of AIESEC and I want to get the most out of it. It's a valuable opportunity for me to gain leadership experience, to work with a young team and to meet a lot of new, interesting people. LC Zurich has a goal of being excellent and I just want to contribute to this goal. But most importantly I think I'm going to have a great time and a lot of fun this next year, which is my main motivation and also my personal goal.

Nadine Engbersen - VPX 10/11

I am Nadine Engbersen and I already mentioned that I’m studying communications, but during my speech I hadn’t enough time to explain why. I choose this field, because it was the only one that had (almost) no mathematics, acquired no Latinum and which I could imagine myself working in and after all, it seemed to be exciting and it is. Furthermore, I am a rather shy and sometimes very sarcastic person, at times I’m very well organized, I love my friends, socializing, Photography and travelling.

I was confronted with AIESEC for the first time, during the most boring lecture of my studies, which might be the reason why I actually listened to the one who did the lecture shout. I joined AIESEC because I realized that I finally found what I was secretly looking for. A cool student organization with a high rate of internationality that did not only offer the chance to go abroad but also gave their members the unique opportunity of developing themselves on a free basis.
From March on I will be the VPX of our lovely LC. The whole LC and especially the EB 10/11 has one dream – to win the AIESEC Olympics. My personal strategy is to promote AIESEC more at the ETH and we still haven’t yet reached every corner of the University to spread the knowledge about what AIESEC offers and how we can easily help to realize dreams. Besides that, I want to set value on raising internships and to stay in contact with every company we've ever had an EP in.
My personal aim during my term as a VPX is not only to increase our exchange rates and be as good as my predecessor, but I also want to enjoy my term, learn as much as I can, take the advantages and opportunities that AIESEC offers me, make the best out of it and have a great team, a great time and lots of laughs and good times to remember.

Where oldies meet newies... Alumni Round Table

Every months the @-alumni of Zurich meet for a round table at Paddy Reilly‘s, an Irish pub in the heart of Zurich where the smell of beer mingles with happy chit-chat. This 3rd December two tables were not enough and we found ourselves happily cramed together, switching places to talk to new arrivals.

These round tables are an opportunity for our alumni to meet up again, busy with their working lives. Some of the guests were never members of the LC Zurich but rather another LC in Switzerland or Germany. The @-spirit is very much around and as we all have something in common, it is easy to approach people I didn‘t know before. Therefore, I am happy to announce that I met the mother of Marmita. She was very sad to hear the news of her baby being wed to our Leo, unfortunatelly the LC Geneva had not invited her to the wedding.
During the round table I met many alumni of our LC and it was great to see their interest and passion for @. It's one of my goals to bring the two circles together in the near future. Many of our alumni would love to get to know the current LC better and I‘m sure we can oblige them with an opportunity. I've seldomly met such open-minded, experienced people willing to share their knowledge. Anyone is welcome to join for one of these alumni round-tables. The next one will probably be held in mid-January. Just contact me for further infos.

Santa Claus at University - This must be LC Zurich's Christmas event!

When you see suspicious people running around with red blankets around their shoulders or who look like dangerous gangsters, then this can only mean one thing: LC Zurich is celebrating Christmas (with Darren a.k.a. Santa Claus and Adrian a.k.a. the evil “Schmutzli”)! This year, our traditional Christmas get-together took place at the university and thus gave us the opportunity not only to enjoy some snacks and drinks in a cosy atmosphere, but also to have an interesting programme:

Our newies were officially declared members of AIESEC and got their member certificate, after having successfully passed a quiz on all the various abbreviations at @ (and paid their member fee, of course ;-) ). Afterwards, Vali, our new intern from Romania, presented herself and her country with a funny video and shared some tasty Romanian pancakes with us! Thanks again :-)!

The main part of the evening though was the award show, which rewarded various members of LC Zurich for their extraordinary work in AIESEC. Here are the glorious winners:

Julien Weber was rewarded for being the Most Diligent Member of AIESEC Zurich. Although being a member for only three months, he already showed great interest and put a lot of effort into AIESEC.

Anabel Gaetan won the Honorary Member Award. Being an AIESEC member in her home country Argentina, Anabel spent six months here as an OGX team leader and will participate in the transition phase as well.

Sarah Wiederkehr was rewarded for being an outstanding Key Account Manager Role Model. Most of us are still jealous of the four- kilograms Toblerone chocolate bar she got…;)

Valérie Kuhn and Tony Kümin stood out as Zurich’s Most Valuable Members of AIESEC. Valerie’s great engagement, overall in education management, resulted in a raise of several high class external workshops. Tony’s proactive thinking and IT know-how contributed a lot to AIESEC’s development so far.

Nadja Zürcher was rewarded for her outstanding and straight forward networking abilities and therefore received the Best Networker Award.

Marc Alesch won the glorious Rising Phoenix Award, being a committed and proactive AIESEC member, whom the LC expects to overtrump himself even more.

Marcel Sprecher, Sebastian Rode, Philipp Heller, Jih-Ming Chen and Marc Schamaun got the Most Golden Goldie Award. Being former members of LC Zurich for one or even several years, those guys are still showing a great extent of commitment and engagement in the LC.

Once again, congratulations to all the winners and thank you for your effort! And also, a big thank you for those who organised this Christmas event! Now everyone’s hopefully in the right mood to enjoy the holidays – so Merry Christmas and a happy new year to all of you!

IBM Mentoring Training

December 3^rd - A new mission on AIESEC's way of developing its members' leadership potential was fulfilled. Thanks to our partner IBM, about 40 AIESECers, hungry for knowledge, could enjoy about six hours of high-class mentoring training, delivered by the two IBM-coaches Jean-Mark and Heig. A small theoretical introduction, followed by a lot of interactive exercises and soon a new generation of mentors was born.

What is your goal? What are you trying to achieve? And how do you think you will achieve it These where the essential questions of the day. While facing these questions and using IBM's “G.R.O.W.”-model, we could not only learn how to help each other while supporting the goal setting. Even more important where the small things we were able to improve: how to listen to each other, how to understand other people and how to give positive feedback.

After this intensive experience, five members of AIESEC Zurich can bring tons of new gained wisdom into our LC. And who knows, maybe next time there will be even more of us who benefit from this great possibility of self-development.

New Interns in Town

Yet another month has passed and we're finding ourselfs in December already. As time flies, interns come and go without many uf us realizing... We just had a farewell drink with Dominique, David and Nick - our 3 lovely Citi interns that we are going to miss a lot - and already new ones have arrived. This weekend Valeria from Romania and Panos from Greece found their way to Zurich. Both of them will be working for Kraft Foods and are eager to getting to know LC Zurich's local reality and the people behind email addresses. They have reassured to come to our Klaus-Event this Sunday and will even bring something special from their country! :-) The small group who helped them with legal matters already enjoyed their company while drinking coffee and chatting. Sure enough both of them already feel welcomed and integrated by now.

LC Zurich X-Mas-Dinner on December 6th

Our interns arriving in one week will introduce themselves and our lovely new members will finally get their member certificate! Living Diversity and Intercultural Exchange: AIESEC Zurich meets Hochschule Lucerne

Today, Anabel and Corina went to the Cultural X-Plosion event which took place at the Hochschule Lucerne. The event consisted in a get-together of people from all over the world who represented their countries. Some of them even prepared a typical dance or played a special instrument and students could taste typical food as well. In addition to that, information about cultural shock, internationalization and cultural awareness was provided and a presentation about cultural experiences was held.
We, as AIESECers, could not miss this event in order to promote the opportunty to go abroad. Students were generally interested in our program and we hope that many of them will take the chance to go on an internship with AIESEC. Moreover, we showed that AIESEC offers a wide range of options that are for sure not coverd by other organizations.

Discovering Leadership Skills

Have you ever thought about leading a team meeting effectively? Do you know what the difference between a manager and a leader is? And what about a helpful checklist with useful points to prepare a meeting?

In our last LC meeting, we had the chance to learn more about all those points and could see that a combination of manager and leadership skills is the best way in order to lead a team successfully. This means that doing the things right is as important as doing the right things. Valérie explained us the importance of individual consideration, intellectual stimulation, inspirational motivation and idealized influence in a leadership position. But not only the theoretical aspect was part of the training. We could also follow the presentations of Benjamin and Darren, who shared with us their leadership experience within AIESEC. Moreover, a discussion about planing and realizing a meeting showed us how to transfer our knowledge into praxis. By the way, the two checklists “How do I lead a team?” and “How do I organize a meeting?” can be obtained by our education manager Valérie.

Fiesch: Do-It Swiss National Conference 2009

“Best conference I have ever been to!” This is probably the most frequent answer you get when you ask about how the Aiesecers feel about the Do-It conference 2009 in Fiesch. And it doesn’t matter whether you ask experienced members or Newies, the enthusiasm is enormous!

From November 12^th – 15^th, about 400 young national and international delegates spent four days working on the integration of the Newies and the development of the experienced members, partying and just enjoying the AIESEC culture together.

Here are some impressions:

"I came to the conference with a very wrong image. Conference - I connected this word to work or learning and my first thoughts were “Oh my god, why do I have to do this?”. There was work and learning at the conference, especially the 4 hours AIESEC XP block was a hard piece of work and there were many things to learn. To be honest, most of the Newies (me included) must have been too tired to actually realize what they were doing.

The workshops were great as well. I was really surprised that there was almost no sleeping-potential in any of the ones I attended. Considering the amount of sleep I – and obviously the others as well – had the nights before, the enthusiasm of the Aiesecers and the attention paid to the leaders of the workshops was amazingly high (Although the leaders might not always have recognized that, due to their own amount of alcohol in their blood :-) ).

That’s another point: the enthusiasm. On Friday morning when I took my seat at the morning plenary, my first thought was “What the hell are those people doing there, dancing on the stage? Are they crazy?” No. They’re not. It would be stupid to agree, because after the second morning I was one of those crazy people. After all, I learned that this early dancing

is way more effective than drinking liters of coffee.

And last but not least, there was the Global Village. I couldn’t really imagine anything when somebody tried to explain me what Global Village was. An exchange of local food and drinks? Cool. It was even cooler than I thought. There’s no way to describe Global Village

to those who weren’t there. I’m sorry. Come and join the next time!

To finish this short article, I want to answer the question I asked myself in the first paragraph. Why was I at the conference? Not only to live the spirit of an AIESEC conference but also to understand why 400 people throw themselves simultaneously to the floor after somebody shouted “Space Grenade…!!”, to give and get sugarcubes, the AIESEC way of saying ‘thank you for this great time!’ and after all, to do some NETWORKING… ;-)" (Nadine)

"Four days in Fiesch with four hundred young adults result in a lot of fun.

That's the most important lesson I learned during my first conference as an AIESEC member. After arriving with a sense of nervousness and excitement, we were thrown into the cold water during an opening plenary, where all the values and themes of the conference were on full display. The following party just showed that AIESEC took their motto "Work hard, party harder" seriously. True enough, the next three days were mostly insightful, sometimes stressful, boring at moments, but definitely always tiring. The nights on the other hand... well I think the pictures speak for themselves.

At the end of the conference I left for Zurich with quite a few memories and acquaintances. And now, I'm looking forward to Kick-off, which will be organised by Zurich and therefore can only be just as exciting as Do-It!" (Albert)

Swiss Dinner at Zeughauskeller

As a new kind of SOcial Activity (SOA) the IM-Team made a reservation at Zeughausekeller with the goal to have a nice time and get to know each other a little better. The restaurant is very well known for its traditional Swiss Food, which offered a good chance for our recently arrived Interns to try it.

We were about 10 people and seated comfortably at a table in the back part of the restaurant. Everybody tried something else, reaching from "Zürigschnetzlets" and Cordon Bleue to Rösti and Tortelloni while Tony, Michael P. and Savvas each devoured a huuuge Wienerschnitzel! (...see photo 2)

We enjoyed the company of Olga, one of the new interns, and some Newies while eating the delicious food and laughing at lot (not at the same time, for anyone wondering if someone choke :P). Unfortunately nobody brought a camera, so we took pictures with an iPhone and some less adequate phones – works too I guess ;-P.

After dinner, we decided to move on and have a drink in a bar. The decision was made fast – Newsbar. There we drank a beer, talked about FC Vaduz, queen Elizabeth and about the stars in the universe meanwhile letting a peaceful evening end. The evening was a new experience which we plan to repeat in the foreseeable future.

Lost son of LC Zurich found in GENEVA!

We look back on March 2009: In order that all new elected EBs of AIESEC in Switzerland can start their term, the lovely OC team with OCP Rebekka and OC Jennifer, Sarah, Franca, Valérie and Thomas organized the Transition Conference in rural Lucerne. Not just with their amazing cooking skills, but also with showing great performance of LC Zurich they facilitated us, the EB 09/10, a wonderful and smooth start into the term! With a certificate we wanted to thank them – unfortunately at that time Thomas, the only man in the OC, was already disappeared and the certificate had to lie around more than half a year in a dusty drawer of the LC office …

Good times: Transition Conference March 09

… until Thomas has been found again, in Geneva where he is continuing his studies, far away from his home LC. The chance had to be used and finally we could thank Thomas for his support and great job during the Transition conference!! All attempts were in vain to get him back to Zurich; Hania, the LCP of LC Geneva, and her team, need him in their Local Committee now.

We wish Thomas all the best for his studies and for his internship plans this winter, and hope that he won’t forget his home LC in far Zurich. He will be back here around December 5th for his exams … so everyone who wants to use this chance to catch up with him, don’t miss this chance:-)

AIESEC Zurich’s NEXT GENERATION Fall 2009

Even before the fall semester at the university of Zurich started, LC Zurich was already looking for new members during the „Erstsemestrigentage“, and right after the ACT-conference continued with lecture shouts, distributing of flyers and be present at the info stands. At four info-events during lunch time or in the evening, more than 100 interested students showed up and wanted to know more about AIESEC. Finally around 50 of them registered online on the homepage of LC Zurich and attended the Induction-Event for new members on October 7th, hold by Maike and Dave. One week after the current members got to know the applicants better during the Entry-Talks, while on a peaceful Sunday the EB 09/10 together with Tony and Marc made the final member selection. At the LCM on October 21st finally the new members of this term attended their first normal meeting and already got allocated and involved in their functional area.

LC Zurich warmly welcomes the new members of this term and is already looking forward to a great half a year!!!

Student Review Board October 2009

For the last time this year, Local Committee of Zurich organized the SRB Student Review Board for outgoing Exchange Participants. On a cold Saturday morning, more than 15 experienced AIESEC members gathered at the university of Zurich to interview around 15 EPs. Mine Bardakci, member of the Interns Management Team of LC Zurich since spring 2009, took the lead and organized this event together with OGX Coordinator Anabel Gaetan and OGX member Teddy Low. With a proper preparation and organization, and especially with a huge buffet of snacks, fruits and refreshing drinks, the lovely OC delighted the interviewers as well as the Exchange Participants. No surprise, that all (!!) EPs passed the interview and can go ahead on their way to an AIESEC internship abroad…

Recruitment's going on!

As every semester we are recruiting new, high potentinal members for AIESEC. During the days for the 1st semesters we could present ourselfs with a stand where we distributed flyers and agendas.
As you can see we not only had flyers and agendas but also poster, post-its rulers and much more. Our AIESEC stand really attracted people and we could talk to a lot of potential mermbers.

Our special thanks go to Wu - our Wumanizer - who helped flyering during two days and everybody else who invested an hour or more in the recruitment!! It is a very intense time and we could still need the help of many of you ;-)

Another LEGENDARY BBQ

On one of the probably last sunny afternoons AIESEC Zurich invited its members and interns as well as externals for another barbecue! This time the location was Irchelpark and the OC bought meat and drinks.

Most of the members were back from their vacations and many interns got off work early, so we were about 40 people who enjoyed the sun and food.

The sunset came too early but didn’t stop us from having nice chats while enjoying dessert. When it got a little cold, a small group decided to go to a bar while the others went back home. Of course AIESEC would never leave the Irchelpark dirty, so almost everybody helped cleaning up. The OC was also happy to have additional help for carrying the left-over back to the office.

Those who went to the bar even managed to watch the last minutes of the night’s soccer game before the usual AIESEC drinking randomness started. Eventually everybody make it back home ;-)

Interns farewell: Goodbye Virginija, goodbye Kevin

New interns are coming, others are leaving – that’s the usual way in AIESEC. You can meet lots of new people and become friends, but since most of the people are quite international, the time together is always limited. What remains, is the friendship. Some interns get out of our mind quite quickly, but 2 Interns who have been very active in AIESEC Zurich, will be present for always.

After a short night back at the airport

Kevin Jun arrived in August 2008 for a one-year-internship at UBS. Soon he showed great performance and in spring 2009 UBS wanted him to stay longer – unfortunately not possible due to strict law in Switzerland. That’s why he got accepted to continue his work in London working for UBS. He didn’t just get along with all the interns, but also had a really good relationship to the LC members with his friendly and open-minded appearance. In case someone of you guys is going to London, don’t forget to contact him:-)

Last time at the lake of Zurich

18 months of her life spent Virginija from Lithuania in Zurich – when she came to Switzerland in January 2008, Kraft Foods had only around 3-4 trainees, not comparable to now with more than 15 interns. From summer 2008 she was the Trainee Coordinator and for LC Zurich the first contact person in Kraft, always negotiating between us and Kraft. Because I was the TN-Manager of her internship and responsible for her as buddy, it was something special to go through the whole internship stage with “my” intern; after getting matched prepare her for Switzerland, then picking her up and taking care of the administrative stuff, being in touch with her for 1.5 years and then finally closing the chapter by sending her off to the airport – the ending of the official chapter, then I am already thinking about going to Lithuania to see her again:-)

For those who have wondered - your VPIM is back! ;) with many stories to tell. As already meantioned, about my trips this summer you can read in my personal blog. Now it's all about AIESEC and what I've done for the organisation during this summer break. It's a whole bunch of things, starting from cleaning and painting Bederstrasse, rewriting our housing contract template and other documents, organising events for our lovely interns such as the LEGEN - you know what's gonna come - DARY 1st of August BBQ
and ending with company meetings. For sure I cannot foget to meantion our 4 new interns that have arrived during this time. Welcome again!

Between my days at the AIESEC office, AIESEC parties and AIESEC dinners I also earned some money with working at the oh-so-boring Coop, spent time with my friends and family and used facebook and skype a lot.

I dare say that I used my holidays well! Nevertheless, the new semester is about to start and I'm looking forward to it - a new challenge! :) Another recruitment, more members and even more remarkable moments.

Fourth Episode of your Favorite Journal!

Part IV: We continue our journey with me, the author of the texts. I can give you a brief overview of my holidays starting with June:

· I spent my time in some darn bunker near St. Gallen! 3 weeks around messed up “green” people, doing savage tasks, such as spending my spare time with a Swiss card game called Jass or reading adult magazines…

Let me tell you about July:

· Most of the time I found myself in the ETH or Zurich study room, working on my essay. Weeks around messed up people, studying 24/7 (the people, not me), spending my time thinking about Queen Elizabeth and why she never had kids…

Let me tell you about August:

· I’m looking around and nothing much has changed: I’m still in the library studying for my exam in International Relations and I catch myself wondering what the point of secondary literature is – or why there are so many people who spend time calculating formulas for group theories (why the hell? Doesn’t help me knowing that “trust” equals x+y! It’s all about the charm, baby, that’s it! If you start creating formulas to make people trust you more, you’re doing something awfully wrong! Let’s go out for a beer once, aight?)

Of course, not all these three months have been passed by sitting in some secluded room pondering. I enjoyed the sun, enjoyed friends and beautiful evenings with booze and music. I successfully finished my paper and my exam, I am planning to go to Portugal at the beginning of October, and I visit my girlfriend and my family more often. Still, I cannot shake the feeling that there is this massive, black cloud engulfing me, choking me – and suddenly I realize where I am, and what I will be doing in the next few weeks… I’m sitting in the AIESEC office, working 24/7 around messed up people… what’s the formula to make me sane again?

3rd Episode of the EB Journal

Part III of the Holiday Journal is dedicated to our VPER, Cristina! …and when I look at the audience I can see one gleeful face and the rest is groaning… I had too, after receiving the notes on her holidays – we’re talking blogs here, she’s talking novels! So, it was like – please envision – a large wave of information, stories and gossips flooding over me, out of which I grabbed bits and pieces and put them together to form some sort of coherence… you could also imagine a babbling person at your side, and your attention span waning and waking, only remembering less than 25%... whatever, sit down and listen to Cristina:

“I’ve spent my summer time in good old Switzerland. And even when I wished from time to time to go abroad, I’ve enjoyed my life here in 5 different ways:

Studies: From Wednesdays till Saturday, from 8am till 6pm (or longer), I’m working on my two bachelor theses (“The Japanese motives for its imperialism and its implementation on its first and last colonies” and “The language policy in AIESEC Switzerland”) and studying for a 6-hours-exam. During these hours I’m sitting somewhere in the library or in the university. (…)

IBM: Every Monday and Tuesday, I’m fulfilling my tasks as Project Administrator. I have to copy tons of documents, arrange meetings, run around in the building to get a laptop for a new subcontractor and fill out some excel files (…)

AIESEC: After my studying and working time I’m working for our organization. And as you already know from the newsletter of our LCP, you should know what I’m doing at the moment. (…)

Sports: “A sound mind in a sound body.” That’s why I’m doing every single day at least one hour of sports (except Sunday). As I’m sitting around a lot during my working/studying times and packing tons of information in my head, I have to excess my energy and to empty my thoughts once in a while. And that’s best done by excessive sports like body combat, muscle pump, cycling, volleyball and jazz dancing. (…)

Private life: This includes friends, family and of course my life as single woman. I’ve hung around with friends in the evenings and at weekends and I’ve visited them in Geneva, Bern, Lucerne, Frauenfeld and of course St.Gallen. (…)”

(…) That sign means there was (MUCHMUCH) more than just that piece of text, but I had to cut it down, I apologize! If you still wanna know what’s going on in Cristina’s life, take her out for dinner or coffee and she’ll readily comply with your wishes, in whichever way you can imagine! ;)

Second Part of the Holiday EB Journal

Part II of our hallway exploration leads to a portrait of Miss Goldilocks Maike, our VPTM. On that oil-painting you find her sitting at a desk writing a letter. These are Maike’s words:

“At the moment I am sitting in the office preparing the upcoming recruitment and the next semesters schedule with Valérie and Tony. We have had a lot of good ideas and looking forward to three interesting trainings (two externals and one internal) – but we will tell you more in the beginning of September.

Personally I will again go on holiday this Wednesday, after spending a weekend in Vienna with my brother, a week in London with my friends and a week at home in Hamburg and on Sylt with my parents. Now I will be travelling up the mountains for 10 days to enjoy the quiet and piece and gather my energy for the next semester.

I am looking forward to seeing all of you again!”

What a lovely letter from Maike! The picture she sends attached is not as lovely as the text, but it’s exactly the absence of warmth, due to the cold beer, that makes you feel the warm regards… and I should go read some normal books again, I’ve just noticed.

Part IIb: Tanja’s idea of telling about her life was posting one of her many holiday experiences on the AIESEC blog with various colorful pictures… The link to all her wonderful holiday blog is included at the end of our text, however.

Tanja is currently in Iceland, wondering where the elves and trolls have gone, enjoying the ever-changing temper of the weather, hiking at waterfalls, bathing in lagoons and hot spots, riding on real Icelandic horses and doing some sight-seeing around glaciers. Additionally, she is surprising us with valuable facts. Did you, by any chance, know that the contract who ended the Cold War was signed in Reykjavik? I didn’t, shame on me!

EB Holiday Journal Part I

Hello everyone

The people in the background running all the operations... a nightmare to conspiracy theorists! However, to calm those who need empty satisfaction built on sensations and to tranquil those who ask themselves in quite concern, whether the EB of Zurich is doing swell, we will take you to 5 different scenarios, 5 different persons, and 5000 different emotions J welcome to our world...

Imagine a gallery hallway with lots and lots of paintings and framed documents. Imagine walking along the ornamented walls – imagine passing a spot with a thousand TN-documents and EP-fees, and probably the most abbreviations. Welcome to area X: Adrian’s realm.

Adrian’s normal day allegedly looks like this: Breakfast at home in Baden, morning study time in one of Zurich’s libraries, lunch (I don’t know where), 2 hours in the afternoon in the office, the rest of the day in some library or study spot where he can’t be found or contacted, eventually heading home for dinner and another study session in the evening… A very busy dude, Adrian works on several events and tasks at the same time, here’s a list of the things he will complete in the next few weeks:

· implementation of the buddy-system

· re-structuring of the OGX Coach Team

· Summer Exchange Events: Organizing the Induction event, SRB & XPS for AIESEC in Switzerland

If you can’t find him in Zurich or Baden, Adrian’s favorite retreat is somewhere in Locarno. God knows where – it’s “catch-me-if-you-can” with this guy, day and night… at least we caught him in this picture, standing next to one of our beloved members…

SNOWy days for LC Zurich

Snow Lam, a very experienced AIESEC member of LC RUC in Mainland China, visited us for several days. After a UN-conference in Geneva and before starting her CEED (Cultural Envoy for Exchange Development) in Germany, she dropped by for some days and spent a nice time with the interns and the members of LC Zurich.

I got to know Snow during my own exchange in China; that’s why she wanted to get to know especially the Zurich Local Committee. After arriving just on the day of the Street parade, she even could join the later part in the evening. On Sunday she gathered several interns and members for a boat trip and relaxing at the lake of Zurich, before preparing an unforgettable dinner for her new friends.

On Monday Snow supported the LC with the China Xchange Event, where she gave useful hints and support to the LC Zurich members who are considering going to China for their AIESEC internship. For Tuesday she prepared once more a fantastic dinner, after going sightseeing and visiting all the museums and churches of the city ;-)
Now, she is already involved in AIESEC Germany's activities and supporting the Xchange Team, but still would like to see her friends from Zurich once more. Snow will be in Munich until the beginning of October, and already invited us to attend with her the Oktoberfest:-)

The Street Parade from an AIESEC perspective

One of the biggest festivals has been taken place in Zurich: THE STREET PARADE. And of course, our VPIM felt responsible to create a social event for the LC and its interns. So, she asked the EB after an exhausting, but exciting EB Meeting what she shall write in the email concerning the meeting time and point. The problem was quickly solved, as the great EB of LC Zurich has always a solution for such an important problem: 2 p.m. at platform number one at the main station! But there was another problem: Who is going to take the big challenge as leader of this group and guides it through the dangerous streets of Zurich during these tough times? Everybody looked first at the VPIM, as it’s actually her responsibility to take care about these risky events, but she swiftly said: “No, I can’t. I have already another challenge this Saturday: My job at COOP where I have to face already creepy clients and an even creepier boss!” Hence, the eyes of the EB was looking suspiciously to every single person in the room, but every VP and even the LCP itself had sleazy excuses for not taking this huge responsibility, as they were too afraid of it. However, there was one single VP which didn’t manifest herself to this subject yet: It was the VPER, known for her fatality and her intrepidness. And the President took the chance to lay down the law and said: “You, lady fatal, will take over this important task and lead this group! Be a role model and have an impact on society by developing others potential!” So, it was decided.

The day of the Street Parade was coming nearer and nearer and the VPER wanted to prepare herself for this leadership role by choosing the right outfit: Fatale and sexy, but also model. At 1.30 p.m. she was ready for the challenge and made for the main station to meet the members and the interns at platform number one. Punctually at 2 p.m. she was standing there… But, where was her group she was expected to lead? Could it really be that everybody else except her was too anxious for this fight through the streets of Zurich? But wait! She explored one of the other VPs! And it was true: the VPX had the courage to battle from the library along the Limmat to the main station and came to see the group of LC Zurich and to wish them good luck for their combat during the Street Parade. And suddenly, they discovered the others: THE INTERNS! They have been waiting already downstairs at platform number one, missing a leader. So much for the effective solutions of the EB, thought the VPER… Anyway, she was checking her group: Yip, Gelati, Nazar, Martin and Nicolas, all tough guys which were ready to fight in the crowd of the Street Parade. However, the VPER was considering their strategy and thought that it would double their strength when they would have some support. So, she dialled a number on her mobile and said to the other person on the phone: “Hey Nicolas, my beloved fellow of LC Lausanne. I’ve heard you’re also here in this city with some friends for the Street Parade. Though, I have a suggestion for you: why don’t we band together to one powerful delegation and show the amazing power of AIESEC!!” Nicolas, the unofficial mascot of ER at LC Lausanne, was thinking about this selling proposal by the VPER and answered: “Okay, lady fatal, come along to Schaffhauserplatz. We are about to prepare ourselves for the combat on the streets with some mighty drinks at a friend’s place.” The troop of the VPER made for this friend’s place to catch up the others and also to try these mighty drinks. As soon as the VPER and the unofficial ER-mascot met, they screamed “Shout, shout, let it all out, these are the Swiss you’ve been dreaming about!” - A secret code of the Swiss Delegation, created once for an international AIESEC conference in Malta. With unified forces, they became a platform for young people who were eager to impact the society by demonstrating integrity and striving for excellence. And suddenly, they were in the middle of the Street Parade and fighting their way through the crowd, unstoppable, even when a hard rain tried to destroy their mood. But in every combat, there is a need for a rest, so the delegation was looking for food to regain energy. Even the VPX showed up again with a mysterious Chinese princess. And after this short break the delegation felt strong enough to continue their fight. But suddenly the interns of LC Zurich realised that their leader was gone, as well as the guy of LC Lausanne. What happened? Hopefully nothing serious? No, not at all. Nothing can harm the intrepid and fatal VPER of LC Zurich. She just needed a little nap before the big after party started, so that she could enjoy participation. She knew she could leave her delegation alone as she was convinced that they were able to fight on their own on the dangerous streets of Zurich.

Train the trainers conference in Bern: 8. and 9. August 2009

On the weekend 8th and 9th of August I participated in a mini TtT (Train the trainers) seminar in Bern which was facilitated by François, our national trainers coordinator and Asia and Iolanda from the MC and took place in the MC Office.

The two days were incredibly intense – as they had cut a three day conference to only two days. We started on Saturday at 10 am and worked all through the day until 10 pm at night. Apart from our fantastic three Facis we were six delegates all together: Jessica from LC Lausanne (TMU), Emina from LC Bern (TMU), Adrian from LC Lausanne (VPTM), Dave from LC Aston (MC VPTM), Philipp our MCP and I. It was a wonderful group of highly motivated individuals and we really learned a lot and improved our skills in public speaking and preparing trainings.

The sessions were very interactive and we got the chance not only to learn theory about the human learning processes and tips and tricks on how to prepare good sessions but could also practice on stage receiving a lot of valuable feedback.

During the two day conference we developed the following skills:
• Effective Learning
• Training session development
• Training methods and visual support
• Presentation skills
• Basic knowledge in communication, motivation and group dynamics
• Understanding of the role and responsibilities of a trainer

The rest of the content will stay a mystery and I encourage every AIESECer to once participate in a TtT. It not only helps you to get more confident on stage and give you important aspects on how to prepare and give a good training, but you learn a lot about yourself and it is the first step to become a good public speaker.

I am looking forward to give my first successful trainings in the near future!

Adiós Diana and Tobi

Everyone knew that this day will become true once, no one was looking forward to it, but then... on Tuesday July 28th 2009 it became reality: Diana, our lovely Vice President of Exchange 2008/2009 was leaving Switzerland, together with Tobias, heading to Australia. No coming back to Switzerland was planned, what made the farewell much more emotional and difficult for all of their friends!

Most of the EB and former EB members came to the airport in the evening of July 28th, accompanied by some interns and other friends of Diana and Tobi, to send them off.

Obviously, since Diana joined AIESEC, she has always been in touch with interns, first as part of the Integration and Social Activities team in 2007 and then as Vice President of Exchange during 2008. Tobi joined AIESEC in summer 2008. Since he was doing an internship in Zurich (not via AIESEC), he could live in an empty room of an AIESEC apartment and got through that in touch with the organization. From summer on he was active as the Reception Coordinator, hence responsible for the arrival of incoming interns.

Last Goodbyes

Both of them changed LC Zurich in a very positive way, not just with their very professional way of working and dealing with problems, but also through their kindness and openness, and they always will be present in our mind as our GOOD FRIENDS!!! We wish Diana and Tobi all their best in their new period of life! We will always remember you, and hope to see you one day again amigos, para siempre!! Los quiero mucho.

Microfinance for the restaurants situated on the beach of Manta, Ecuador

In this short essay I will try to give insight on my life on the coast of Ecuador. The purpose of my staying here is to stimulate the economic development in the impoverished urban community of Manta. To this end, I have been helping an association of 19 restaurants raise money to enable them to move to new facilities. Moreover, I am here in Manta to get to know the culture of the citizens of Ecuador and to improve my Spanish skills.
Even though it is quite challenging, I like my work very much. My supervisor is a director of The Department of Tourism, and I have a lot of responsibilities. I can decide how I want to help these people so as to improve the quality of their work and to raise money. I’m promoting a tourism area called “Parque del Marisco” through media, booklets, the internet and international travel guides. In conjunction with this, I have organized several events such as “la noche manabita”, “el Segundo festival del marisco “ and “el bingo viajero, in order to improve public relations.

Press conference about our social projects

As I want to help the owners and employees of the restaurants to acquire more professional skills, I’m also offering a seminar each Tuesday. The topics I have already discussed with them have been “customer service”, “English for gastronomy”, and “hygiene”. Moreover, as there are many kids around this area, we offer English lessons, so they can communicate with the tourists. We also teach them the same topics we discuss in the seminars so they can help their parents to implement the new knowledge.

The purpose of an AIESEC-Internship is not only to fulfil the expectations of the company where the Intern is working, but also to get to know more about the way of life in the host city, its neighbouring regions and most of all its citizens. As most of the Interns are living in a house with other Ecuadorians we get to know their customs, and their way of thinking. Fortunately, I also had the opportunity to stay for the first two weeks in the house of an Ecuadorian family. Here I was exposed to many new points of view, and their day to day life. As the company I am working for (The Department of Tourism) does not expect me to work on weekends, I have had the opportunity to travel and get to know more about the countryside of Ecuador. Each weekend we travel to another place; in the coming weeks I am looking forward to visiting the Galapagos Islands and Colombia.

LEGENDARY 1st of August BBQ

Lately the weather in Switzerland has been crazy, from hail to sunshine you never knew what to expect. Therefore it was quite impossible to plan an outdoor activity ahead. Nevertheless LC Zurich and its SoA (Social Acitivities) Team took the risk and organized a LEGEN ... just wait for it ... DARY barbecue on the Swiss National Day. Luckily the weather turned out to be just perfect.
A small group met at the main station while others came directly to the Glattalpark. There we went swimming, played beach volley, soccer and basketball, and of course ate a lot!

From meat and chips to watermelon and beer we had everything. (Thank you Nazar for bringing that much for your birthday celebration!)

Time flied and it soon became night. Some left to go to the OpenAir Concert at Rote Fabrik. The others stayed a little more and finally cleaned the barbecue place. This last group then went to university, watched the fireworks all over Zurich from the ETH terrace and finished with a drink at Monkeys.

Thank you everybody for coming! You and the gossips (former EB member and model) made it worth it. Looking forward to more LEGENDARY moments to come!

Message from India: Sarah Wiederkehr - Take One

I’m sitting in my room, trying to capture some impressions of India in a few sentences. Right now I’d love to take a shower, but there is no water and I don’t really fancy the bucket-shower. The water only flows at certain times during the day, due to water shortage. I share the room with two Egyptian and one American girl. We live in a boarding school where we teach the children about our countries and culture. Since there are way too many people for the work load, we have an average working time of five minutes a day…

Nevertheless, I have already seen quite a lot of India. On my fourth day I went on a one-week-trip to Udaipur (there is supposed to be a lake with a “swimming palace”, but the lake was dried out…), Jaipur (also known as the “pink city”, I’d rather call it “pig city” due to the overwhelming pig population J ), Agra (Taj Mahal is literally breath taking!!!), New Delhi (the biggest city I’ve ever been to) and Pushkar (where we got ripped off for a “blessing” by a “priest”). Apart from the fact that our driver constantly fell asleep and an Egyptian Intern ended up driving the car, we had a lot of fun

The attached picture with Marie was taken on the Opening Conference for Project One World on the 18^th of July. The second one was on the day of the total solar eclipses (which happens only once every 140 yearsJ). Unfortunately it was very cloudy and we could not see the crest, but the sky got very dark for a few minutes which was very impressive!

Next week I will travel to Varanasi and Kalkota. I shall write another blog entry when I am back

Summer Exchange Events

Meanwhile most of the other LCs of Switzerland are out of the country for vacation or working somewhere, LC Zurich decided to host the Induction Event, the Student Review Board and up to all the Xchange Preparation Seminar, everything held in July 2009.

The Seminar

The first event started on Wednesday evening July 15th with the Induction Event for all Exchange Participants who are not active members. Maike gave them basic information about AIESEC, while Adrian taught them the most important knowledge about myaiesec.net and the Xchange process. Unfortunately just Zurich EPs attended this very useful event.

Three days later was the Summer SRB for whole AIESEC Switzerland, held once more in Zurich, with the great OC Emily and Anabel and the OCP Teddy. Since 2/3 of all EPs have been from Zurich university together with more than 80% of Zurich Interviewers, it was a bit like a family reunion. Additionally 4 members of the new MC took part in the interviews.

Last but not least was Laura Bammatter together with her lovely OC Team Team Emily and Simone organizing the Xchange Preparation Seminar, where Asia could perform for the first time in her term with a very good result, supported in the sessions by Adrian.

Now, around 20 new EPs in AIESEC Switzerland are ready to go abroad for an unforgettable experience working in a foreign country

Zurich goes Thailand

I left Switzerland for Bangkok one day after my last exam when the airport was re-opened after the political situation in Thailand was less tense. Exciting! Unfortunately, on the same day of my arrival, the MCP of Thailand had a motorbike accident. So two girls, the MC Communication and a MC member of last year, picked me up and accompanied me to the MC house, where some members and interns are living. The first impression of the house? Terrible. Totally messy, people coming and going, leaving the residents with absolutely no privacy! Now 3 weeks here, those people became my close friends and we can talk about everything under the sun, go travelling on weekends and meet after work in the evening. Perfect ☺ The MC house is in the suburbs, but with the sky train and the Tuk-tuk, it just takes one hour to reach the MC office for the work. From 10pm a dog gang is terrorizing the surrounding and love to hunt for MC members – my first encounter with them was on December 24th at night, when around 10 dogs surrounded me snarling and barking… As we are the only foreigners around the district, everyone knows and loves us:-D and likes our behaviour! The local residents enjoyed the funny street spectacle when I had to jump from the 2nd floor of the house as I got locked in my bedroom to re-enter the house again.
The MC office is located at the Wall Street Tower in the heart of Bangkok and offers a unique view of the cityscape. I am not only in charge of ICX and OGX for whole Thailand, but also get to work for ER and TM. The working hours are sometimes really long and it’s not unusual to sit after work in a nice café with the notebooks in front of us still working. Nevertheless, there is also time for play and leisure of course, and already on the first weekend, other Interns and some Thai people rented a van and we visited lots of fascinating places.
In Bangkok, the City of Angels, it is hard to imagine anyone being bored as there are too many activities going on! The MC team is already trying to persuade me to apply for next MC here, but I guess some AIESEC people in Zurich are waiting for my return to attend to my duties;)

At the "60th anniversary of AIESEC" event in Bern last week we heard the keynote speech from Mr. Heinz Allenspach who is the founder of AIESEC in Switzerland and was National Councillor from 1979 - 1995. Fortunately, we got a copy of his speech so I can share it with you! Have a look at it, I liked it a lot!

Dear friends,

AIESEC celebrates its 60th anniversary. I congratulate AIESEC and I hope, that it continues to thrive and to prosper. AIESEC is a success-story. Started as a small student organization, carried by student bodies of a small number of universities, it has devolepd into a global organization.

I'm pleased, that I could contribute to the establishment of AIESEC and I'm even more pleased that as a founding member, I have the opportunity today to witness and celebrate the 60th anniversary of the organization we brought to life back then.

Let me take a look at the formative years

Why was AIESEC brought to life?

After the second world war, everyone of us, especially students, wanted to overcome the ditches created by it. We missed the exchange of ideas across borders, the personal contacts between universities, but also the opportunity to do internships abroad in order to get to know the culture and the people of other nations. Today, it's hard to understand how closed the physical, economical, mental and cultural borders were during the time of the second world war.

On the 19th/20th of September 1946, Students from Belgium, France, The Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and Czechoslovakia came together in order to found AIESE. By doing so, they were convinced to contribute to the reconciliation between nations. The University of Prague was chosen to host the presidency. However, due to the communist takeover in Czechoslovakia at that time, AIESE was unable to establish and maintain any activities.

The western members of AIESE couldn't accept this failure. The student body of the commercial college in Stockholm called for a conference from the 3rd until the 5th of March 1949 with the objective to either find a way to deal with the challenges faced by AIESE or to create a new organization. 15 delegates from 8 countries (Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, The Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland) decided to establish a new organization, following closely the way AIESE tried to operate. The goal of those two organizations stayed the same in principal:

We want extensive exchange of information about study-requirements and -conduct
We want the exchange of internships across borders
We want to make it easier for students across borders to get in touch with each other
We want visits for studies and sports activities

Between the 3rd and 5th of March 1949, the compendium of this new organization was created. AIESE becam AIESEC. This was the cornerstone of what later became the global organization whose birthday we are celebrating today.

Student initiatives often don't live for a long time. Often, they disappear again within a few years. AIESEC clearly is an exception. The founding was decent, nothing big or spectacular, no ceremonial act with speeches and celebrated signing of statements. The special thing about AIESEC is not it's founding but the fact that it is still alive after 6 decades and that it has endured the storms of time. Everyone who has carried and contributed AIESEC throughout the years and decades deserves recognition and special thanks by and of everyone.

Let me share with you some general observations

Free and responsible people - especially students - want to cross and overcome borders; they want to extend their knowledge and experiences, they want to tap into the unknown and to achieve the impossible. Only in this spirit, scientific, technical and economical progress is possible.

The founders of AIESEC have not relied on others to realize their goals, nor on the state, nor on universities. They realized their goals by themselves, with their own resources and within their capabilities. They embodied the prase: "Actions speak louder than words."

It is striking that AIESEC, back at the time, was mainly carried by students from small universities from small countries. The founders wanted to act immediately and didn't want to wait until all the universities joined in. A small step at the right time on which you can build upon is often better than big visions never realized, or realized too late.

The first attempt to bridge boundaries between nations in order to foster a global exchange of ideas and experiences failed at first due to the circumstances of contemporary international politics. AIESE remained as a dead letter. However, this was no reason to moan and stuff hands in pockets. A second attempt had to be made. If necessary, there would have been a third and fourth attempt. If something is the right thing to do, all obstacles have to be overcome.

If everyone wants to do something and if everyone acts united, there are always ways and means to achieve. Just by itself, AIESEC would have never developed into the global organization it is today. AIESEC has found companions, other organizations that sponsored and supported it, friends all over the world. Together we are strong and only with this mindset, we are able to overcome the challenges of the 21st century.

Conclusion

This is the spirit of AIESEC. I hope that this spirit stays alive so that we can celebrate many more anniversaries like this. This is what I wish AIESEC, this is what I wish everyone who works in this spirit, this is what I wish all of you in this room.

Hey AIESEC!

I am sending you my best wishes after an amazing 7 days conference in Bratislava! EuroCo is the conference for all the LCPs from Western Europe / North America and from Central Eastern Europe. Almost 200 people from 36 countries took part and made the whole event for me and the Swiss LCP team an unforgetable experience.

7 days full of skills workshops, training, sharing and networking were quite exhausting, but therefore very intense and informative. We were talking a lot about actual trends within AIESEC and the external environment, we were sharing our Best Case Practices and we were working for a stronger network!

It was really cool to talk to people who are the LCPs from one of our beloved interns! „Oh, XY is doing an internship in your LC at the moment? How is she doing?“ Another thing which was very motivating was the fact that we realised how strong we are as Swiss LCs! In terms of incoming exchange, we are one of the leading countries in Western Europe and I was really grateful to see that we are actually doing very well and that we play an important role in the AIESEC network!

Unfortunately, I will not be there at the next LCM, but I will send you some special greetings from Slovakia... ;) I wish you all the best and have fun at the Job Fair!

Hostile Takeover of the LCM

I sadly must inform everyone that our last LCM fell victim to a hostile takeover by the LC Zurich Interns. Despite all the resistance the LC put up we had no chance. We all, including our guests from Winterthur and Basel, were taken hostage and abducted by the interns. Scared to death by their sheer numbers we had no other choice but to participate in the torturous games they had prepared for us.

In order to break every single one of us they put the LC through a series of “games” which solely purpose was to break the last bit of resistance we had left in us. We had to find people, we had no idea about who they were, walk around and make all types of crazy gestures and lauds, answer unspeakable trick-questions and other things I do not even dare to tell.
In the end we were taken to the Lady Hamiltons, where we were forced to socialize with them under strict supervision. Fortunately one brave man took some pictures of our humiliation and Amnesty International was already informed about the unspeakable crimes done to us. The pictures you are about to see are explicit and should not be shown by children under the age of 16.

Kick-Off 2008 Wrap-Up / Latest LCM

Hi guys,

Since I haven't had the chance lately to present you new inputs from AIESEC Zurich, it is finally my time again to bring you up to date.

On the agenda there are two great events that have been happening lately.

First of all, the one and absolutely unique Swiss conference: Kick-Off.

Instead of spamming you with hundreds and thousands of sentences about how great it was, I decided to take it easier and show you a video instead. It has liberally been created by our intern Martin and without further due I present you.....

The second event no one should have missed was a great introduction into myaiesec.net

Since the platform tends to be confusing sometimes we decided to do an additional introduction of the exchange routines. This great presentation was held by Jih-Ming (our very own MC member from Zurich)

And if that wasn't enough, Sarah our great intern from the US was kind enough to give us a little presentation on how to properly "pimp" our CVs.

Adrian: first impressions from China

After 2 months fighting for this internship, then getting the news some days before from the departure that it is cancelled, I reached China in the beginning of March. As I did not get an invitation letter, I could not apply for the right Visa. China has quite strict rules and I was also worrying during the whole trip if they let me in at the customs (as I was not sure if I have a work now or if I go with open options, I also could not buy an air ticket back…).

After more or less half of the airplane passengers helped me in giving some advices how to behave, everything worked well and shortly after the arrival I met my buddy from LC RUC, Kenny Li, and another member of the Incoming Exchange Department, Nicole Li. It was a warm welcome and during the first week, when I was in Beijing, they introduced me to the other members and showed me around. As I’ve never been before in China and the culture is quite different to Europe, it was very good to adapt at first to the Chinese life before starting work.

Unfortunately my work is not in Beijing, but in Zhengzhou in the Henan province. The partner company of the former company which cancelled the internship decided to take me. Until now the work consisted mainly of economic research, making presentations and reports. I am the only foreigner in both companies (except the boss is from Singapore, but can speak Chinese fluently of course).

Beside that I started to work in a nightclub every evening and night. As I don’t have to use Chinese language in the company, it’s a very good opportunity to improve my skills in my second job. Additionally I became member of a football club and a swimming club, and this without purpose.

Due to the visa problem, we tried everything to solve it, but finally there was just one possibility to can stay in China for more than 30 days: going back to Switzerland to change and apply once more for the visa. It was quite hard to stop my Chinese life suddenly, but everything worked more or less well and since last week I am back and can work now legally, with a work permit ☺

The room was packed... literally! I think, we didn't have enough chairs for all the member, newies, interns, MC people which were there. This was just an amazing atmosphere and proved that we are on the right way in Zurich!

But coming to the most important part: our Newies! We are very proud that we could elect 21 outstanding individuals! I am sure that they will rock within our projects, on their internships and of course at Kick Off! Once again my best wishes to you guys!

After discharging the EB 06/07 and voting for the budget 08/09, there was the time for the projects and functional teams! Beside the Career Days, great opportunities on a functional level (like housing responsible or local alumni coordinator), I would like to mention our 3 PBoXes:

Another point to mention: At the last LCM, we had a special guest: Paula Gutierrez, National CSR Director of AIESEC in Colombia! After helping out at the XPS organized by LC Geneva, she visited us and held a presentation about Colombia. Then we had a session about possible "colombian-related" projects which would be interesting for LC Zurich. It was very interesting to learn about the reality from a Local and to see that there is a difference to what we think to know about Colombia. Paula, thanks again for your sessions!

Erste Eindrücke eines Schweizers in der Grossstadt Taipei (Die sich in Taiwan befindet und nicht in Thailand/Korea/Singapore oder sonst irgendwo anders)

Nach etwa gesamthaft 16 Stunden Flug landete die Boeing 747 in Taipei. Ich hatte einen Zwischenhalt in Amsterdam, wo das Rauchen im ganzen Transferbereich des Flughafen nicht erlaubt ist. 3 Stunden Däumchen drehen ohne Zigarette, na toll. In der Maschine nach Taipei gabs auch schon nach kurzer Zeit was zum den Magen füllen. "Chikkin o Biif" fragte mich die Stewardesse worauf ich mit "Chicken" antwortet. Ich wollte dazu ein Bier damit ich wenigsten zu ein bisschen Schlaf komme. Wegen des Biers wollte sie mir "Biif" geben weil "Biif" und "Beer" für sie ziemlich ähnlich klingt. Nach der Korrektur und einige Spritzer Bier in meinem Gesicht (wegen des Öffnen vor meiner Nase) entschuldigte sich die Stewardesse bei mir mit den Worten "Oh, I squirted on you, I am so sorry". In Bangkok gabs einen Zwischenstop von einer Stunde. Beim üblichen Handgepäck Check versuchte ich den Kontrolleuren zu erklären, dass die kleine Tube meine Gesichtscreme sei, worüber sie sich scheinbar ziemlich amüsierten. Zurück im Flugzeug, bestückt mit neuer Crew, gabs auch schon die nächste Mahlzeit die man hier in Taipei als "Hauw-ööh" bezeichnen würde. Aber ich war zu "Hauw-öh" und musste was essen. [Hauw-ööh (mit fallender Betönung auf "ööh") = abscheulich, Hauw-öh (mit aufsteigender Betönung auf "öh") = hungrig].

Angekommen in Taipei wurde ich von zwei Studentinnen von AIESEC und meiner Betreuerin von der Firma abgeholt, die mich sehr freundlich begrüssten und mich ins vorgesehene Youth Hostel in Zentrum von Taipei brachten. Nach dem Verstauen meiner 30kg Gepäck (argh) gings total übermüdet auf Wohnungssuche. Die beiden Studentinnen, die übrigens "Cheyenne" und "Rita" heissen, haben im voraus drei Apartments herrausgesucht. Doch bevor es irgendwo hingeht braucht man hier ne "Easy Card". Ein kleines Stück Plastik was ich sogar der SBB empfehlen möchte. Damit du überhaupt in den Bahnhof reinkommst und rauskommen brauchst du diese Karte.

Das erste Zimmer war schon ziemlich ok. Grosse Fensterfront, Bett, Bad, TV und Internet. Und das alles für 10000 NTD (~330 CHF). Sounds good. Der Standort, direkt an der Hauptstrasse im ersten Stock(was scheinbar nicht so sicher ist), war oke aber irgendwie noch nicht so der Hit. Der Vermieter wollte mir schon einen "Discount" Preis
anbieten, worauf die Studentinnen erklärten das dies nur Taktik sei (würd ich auch so machen). Anstelle die Besichtigungstour fortzusetzen entschieden wir uns eine Prepaidcard für mein Natel zu besorgen. Hätte ich das alleine versucht, wär ich so ziemlich fucked up gewesen. NO english. Nach all den Formularen bekam ich nun auch meine SIM Card. Mit meiner ergatterten Nummer meldete ich mich bei meinen zukünftigen Chef (Geoffrey), der zuerst überrascht war, aber schon helfend zu Seite stand. Zum Beispiel sein Mobilfone-Übersetzungsdienst. Ich rufe ihn an wenn ich mit Leuten nicht klar komme. Er werde dann mein Verlangen ins Chinesische übersetzen. Wunderbar und sehr freundlich fand ich, hab den Dienst aber seit heute noch nicht benutzt. Fürs erste war der Tag gelaufen. Ich kann mich noch gut daran erinnern wie frei und doch
verloren ich mich fühlte.

Nach 12 Stunden Schlaf war das seichte Jetlag verschwunden. Ich hatte mich wieder mit den Studentinnen verabredet um weitere Apartments aufzusuchen. Das nächste befand sich in einem richtig ab-ge-fuck-tem Viertel. War für mich irgendwie ok, aber das Zimmer war höher war als breit. Im nächsten Apartment wurde uns das Zimmer mit dem Licht von
Handy-Display gezeigt. Nichts war wirklich installiert. Also auch ne Niete. Es kam noch ein Zimmer in Frage, ein Tip von meinem Chef. Doch diese Besichtigung sollte verschoben werden, da der Vermieter an diesem Tag verbucht war. Hungrig und durstig gings auf zum berühmten Shilin Night Market. Hier befinden sich auf einem riesigen Areal duzende von Ständen wo frisch zubereitete (und auch nicht so frische) Esswaren und Getränke angeboten werden. Snacking für Fortgeschrittene. Teilweise siehts nicht so appetitlich aus, aber schmecken tuts. Zum Bsp: Eine Reis-Wurst mit einer Fleischwurst darin (sieht aus wie ein Hotdog) oder "Black Pearl Tea" (Tee mit Lackritze-Perlen). Satt und überwuchert mit neuen Geschmackserlebnissen gings ab in die Pfanne.

Am Samstag war ein wenig kompliziert. Das üblichen Problem. Wie komme ich zu Geld. Das kann unangenehm sein, aber noch unangenehmen wenn du jemanden Geld geben solltest. Ich beginne mal von vorne. Wir konnten die Wohnung besichtigen die mir mein Chef empfohlen hat. Sie befindet sich in einem sehr schönen Viertel in der Nähe des Bahnhofs. Im fünften Stock, wo sich die besagte Wohnung befindet, wurden wir vom Vermieter und seiner Frau empfangen. Beide sehr freundlich und sympathisch was sich später auch bestätigen wird. Und das Appartmen auch. Angenehme Grösse, WC, Dusche, Bett, Schrank, TV, Internet, Waschmaschine, Kühlschrank und einen Balkon! Für etwa 300 Stutz pro Monat. H.mmer! Ich sagte sofort zu. Aber wie gesagt, es gab da noch ein Problem. Geld, Geld, Geld. Ich musste ein Deposit (Zwei Monatsmieten) und eine Monatsmiete im Voraus hinlegen. Toll ist das ich mit meiner EC Karte Geld beziehen kann. Einige Automaten wollen da noch nicht so spuren, aber wir fanden dann einen willigen Automaten. Weniger toll ist das meine liebe Bank mir eine Limite von 500.- CHF eingebrockt hat. Doch mein Vermieter verstand dies und gab mir einen Aufschub bis Dienstag. Und weil wir alle ein ziemlich hungrig aussahen lud er uns zum Essen ein. Nach dem Essen nahm uns die Frau des Vermieters (welche die Hosen an hat) mit zu Bettwäschekauf. Sie half uns mit der Verkauferin zu feilschen. Einer der Gründe war: "Der Wai Guo Ren (Ausländer) ist ein armer Student". Scheint auf jeden Fall geholfen zu haben. Nach der sehr angenehmen Begegnung mit meinen Vermieter gings auf nach Danshui. Ein Ort an dem die meisten Taiwanesen in Taipei am Wochenende hingehen. Viele Möglichkeiten zum Snacken und noch mehr Leute an denen man sich vorbeizwängen muss. Es gab schmackhafte und komische Dinge zum Essen. Zum Beispiel: Tomaten mit Zuckerguss. Oder frittierte Pilze. Klingt komisch aber doch lecker.

Nach der letzten Nacht im Hostel zügelte ich mein Hab und Gut in meine neue Bleibe für die nächsten Sechs Monate. Cooles Gefühl. :-). Nach dem üblichen Einrichtprozedere gings auf zum Taipei 101, dem höchsten Gebäude. Ich traf da einige von AIESEC, die mir das Gebiet rund um den Taipei 101 zeigten. Impressive sag ich da nur.

Hi guys, this is my first entry on this blog and I am quite happy to be writing about our very first official INDUCTION.

The house was packed, we had great guests and I think I can say proudly that everyone walked out with a smile.
The event took of with a short presentation about AIESEC and it’s history and right afterwards I had the pleasure of giving over the stage to our very own intern from Ireland Aine. She did a lovely job at presenting the AIESEC To-Go package and I could easily lean back and enjoy the show ;-)

Finally we came to the last, but probably the best phase of our event. THE MILKIWAY.

Ok to be honest the name is copyrighted but we received the permission from Anna to use it ☺

Explaining the chaos and atmosphere we created is slightly difficult so I will let you judge yourself by the pictures. What matters, is that there was haggling, trading, lots and lots of chaos and tons of university students who tried to figure out, what the heck was going on.

It's TRANSIT, Baby!

The term of your new EB started quite intensive. We have been in Bellinzona for the last weekend and after catching up some hours of sleep, I am happy to tell you a little about TRANSIT! Thanks to LC Lugano, we were accommodated in a great venue which was nearly part of the „great wall of bellinzona“. ;) An amazing place for 4 amazing days full of sessions, discussions, networking among the LCs, partying...

As usual, the agenda was packed with tons of interesting sessions which leaded us through functional knowledge, understanding about AIESEC in Switzerland and local planning. And yes, we got some time to climb to the castle and enjoying the great view!

I think it was a great experience to see the different EBs at the very beginning of the term, to see how different the realities are in their respective LCs and especially to meet all the outstanding people which will contribute to a great year of AIESEC in Switzerland!

I would like to thank to the MC for a great conference, to my Team for being a great Team and especially to Marcel, Jenni, Jelena, Seba and Markus for giving us such a good start even before TRANSIT started! You guys can't believe how valuable your work was!

I was searching for some famous "last words" or some quotes dealing with "ends and new beginnings". However, I couldn't find anything that fits the situation perfectly. This weekend, we had our local transition weekend in a Scout-house in Schwerzenbach. 2 1/2 days away from everything (well, almost, the people who where there know what I mean ;) ). 2 1/2 days of intense knowledge transfer, discussions, team-building and lots of fun (it should be absolutely mandatory to play a "I've never ever"-session at every transition weekend ;) ).

Well, actually, Simone discribed the happenings very well in her post in the MC-blog (http://oneyearinbern.blogspot.com/2008/02/its-zurich-baby-oh-yeah.html), so I won't repeat much of it. There's actually just one thing I'd like to stress again: I'm so fucking proud of everyone I had the pleasure to share this awesome weekend with! Seeing the passion, the energy, the willingness of the EBe to give their best in the upcoming term, makes it much easier for me to let go something that was sort of my second home for more than 2 1/2 years, something I put so much heart into, something I built up together with awesome people over three terms! And I'm absolutely sure that my team feels the same way! Seeing how much effort they put into preparing their sessions, seeing how much energy they put into delivering and making sure that the EBe gets the most out of this weekend just shows me, that we have reached something in our term which goes much beyond numbers.

Last EBM

Last Friday your outgoing EB has met for the last time to plan, discuss and decide about different subjects of our LC.
There was serious talk but in the end we also got sentimental, while remembering the best moments we shared troughout this intense year.

With cake(but unfortunately no icecream : ) ) and ice tea we celebrated our last EBM, knowing that we're not done yet but almost, and happy that we have such great successors to continue taking our LC in the right direction.

And after this, we can barely wait for TraWee!!! Yeah!

Have you ever been to a conference? If you have, then you are aware of what great experience it is. If you haven't, then we want to provide you an even greater opportunity to experience one. 'cus we are looking for AIESECer who want to join the OC team at COMA. COMA (conference for communication & marketing) is a international conference specially organised for ER people.

The conference will take place at 09. – 11. Mai in Germany.

The special thing about this conference is that there will be only external economy experts invited as trainer. So, good known German Managers will there to support us in workshops.

I was really happy to welcome around 30 members, our latest intern Milan (Bosnia and Herzegovina, STOXX company) and Jereon, the President of the Swiss Career Days Association, at the last LCM.

A short summary what happened.

-PROJECT UPDATES: ASIA PBoX is very busy with meeting Asia focused companies in Zurich. E.I. has finally launched the website http://www.ethical-investment.net/.

Every @ member and similar PBoXes are invited to have a look and contribute with some feedback, input or own project informations. After some teambuilding Career Days OC is ready to get in contact with companies. Last but not least our lovely Do-It OC is done. They'll close up with a big After-Do-It-Party, 14th of December (further informations will follow). A big round of applause and a well-deserved reward to the OCP Marc: we'll remit the SN fee for his future traineeship!!! :-D

- EB UPDATES: The EB is busy with transition and elections planning, member allocation and brunches. Unijournal published an article about AIESEC with our (now famous) LCP Marcel "Strahlemann" Sprecher!! http://www.unicom.unizh.ch/publications/unijournal/archiv/unijournal-2007-5.pdf

Transition Planning

Your EB has been very productive despite the early hour on a Sunday morning. After enjoying breakfast we got ready to plan the local transition. We discussed and discussed, used flipcharts, made decisions, structured our output, discussed some more, divided tasks and finally created something great.
As you can see on our proud faces as we admire our own work... : )

Future EB of 08/09 be ready to experience an absolutely awesome transition weekend!

But first we are all looking forward to the elections taking place on the 19th of December...

A day ago one of our most committed interns, Marcelo Baudino, left Switzerland.

He was always willing to give a helping hand and advice to LC Zürich. We are really glad to have had him here.
This is the place to thank him one more time for his support, advice and belief in LC Zürich.

He was so special and dear to us that he had not just one goodbye party but two. Diana and Adrian organized the first one as a little surprise and they did a great job. Everyone enjoyed it really much and Marcelo was
indeed surprised.

He received a little Swiss- Survival- Kitt- for those of you who are wondering, what it is: these are the things he needs most to remind him of the good days in Switzerland now that he has left it- from the LC as a recognition and got lots and lots of applause for his doing. Even though he didn't take off his clothes as requested by the crowd. ; )

Marcelo, we enjoyed having you here and you are always welcomed in Switzerland.

So, DO-IT is over. Some people had more time to recover, some less. Already many activities have taken place this week: Insight-certification night, Insight training, Buddy training, Buddy-system improvement session (well done, Diana & Adrian!!), PBoXes are doing research for OGX boost, PBoX South Korea prepares for the business dinner with representatives of the Swiss-South Korean chamber of commerce, Ethical Investment webpage is about to be launched & our first weekly gathering with interns at Lady Hamilton's took place. So, the energy we got from the conference clearly translated into ACTION!!!

The conference has been a great experience for everyone! Need prove? Here are some quotes:

We proudly present.... our Newies

They went through demanding tasks, had to impress at the Entry Talk and last but not least show why they want to be part of AIESEC....
So now after a period of hard selection we finally have our 16 Newies! : ) A reason for celebration!
They were officially acknowledged last Wednesday, the 24.11.07, by the General Assembly. And I know we recruited really cool, motivated and interesting people.

Our newly completed LC has already made the first important decision...about our future t-shirts.

Not only did they get proof of being part of AIESEC Zürich, even more our Newies and our other members also got the chance to see what we have to offer them through our Opportunity Fair.
Several new positions and projects(small or big) were presented. The EB positions, UBS Coordinator, X- Mas Dinner or our latest P-box Asia just to name a few.
Afterwards our members had the opportunity to stroll around and get further information about the projects or positions, that are now open to them. Just like a proper fair, where the opportunities are rides and the responsible person has it's own stand to present it best.
Needless to say, that most of our members found their matches in atleast one of the opportunities.

The celebration took place afterwards in our favorite bar Lady Hamiltons, where the chicken wings are a lot and space is not.

Just one more thing to say:

This biggest training event in AIESEC switzerland will consist of the following parts:
- Selling an Idea/a product/an organization in a professional business environement
- How to sell AIESEC
- Simulations of company calls & meetings

Christopher S. Kälin, Managing Partner & Founder, CSK Management.
Chris is working as a Business Consultant for several years and as part of his job gave plenty of management skills trainings to Executive Boards of SME companies in Switzerland.

This training could be very valuable for all of you. Learning how to sell AIESEC is surely one important part of the training, but you will also gain several skills for your individual personal development. And that not just for the people wanting to work in a company Sales Department after graduation, but for every one of you who in his career will need to:
- sell an idea, own creation, etc.
- structure his arguments to convince people in discussions
- act professional and confident on the phone and in meetings
- present (or better SELL) himself in a job interview or similar thing

-> In other words: EVERYBODY will has to face one or more of the mentioned situations. So take the chance to learn FOR FREE (there are people paying a lot money for such a training) how to better face these situations and take advantage of them.

Züri proudly presents: Ethical Investment!

Since a couple of weeks, preparations for the launch of the new PBoX in Zurich are running. The Issue will be “Ethical Investment“ – an outstanding combination of relevant themes about finance and CSR.

The fact that most of our current and future interns work in companies within the financial sector gives us a great opportunity to create a learning environment, where they can share their point of view, their experience and knowledge around the issue. The aim of the project is to raise awareness among the future leaders in finance, and Zurich is probably one of the best places to start to address it!

We hope that we can give a lot of opportunities to foreign students, but also to our LC members. There are plans about TN’s in the topic of Microfinance.
Until the end of November, we will launch our own Homepage, which will go deeper into the issue and hopefully, it will be a great tool inside the finance project, which is about to start between Switzerland, Germany and Austria!

From ScaLDS to Global Village

Dear LC,

your dedicated EB gang just get back from one of the most amazing AIESEC Experiences in our life: ScaLDS 2007 (Scandinavian Leadership Development Seminar) in lovely Harjavalta, Finland, was certainly the best conference all of us attended so far. Sessions, atmosphere, the site (one hotel in between nowhere, just for us), 120 AIESEC maniacs from 18 countries, incredible individuals (eg. President of AIESEC International 05/06), looooong parties with freaking dances made us having fun big time whilst learning a lot. As a proof you can take the smiling faces of the incredible beautiful Swiss Delegation on this picture. (No, even on international Conferences there is no professional dresscode, this is just the official dinner on the last evening).

The Zurich EB also used the first 2 days of this conferences for intense planing of the 2nd half of our term. So don't miss next semester people!

Btw: If you now are asking yourself how you could be a part of this this great experience next time... Take one of the Leadership Opportunities AIESEC Zurich is offering (OCP, EB in january) and you will. And it'll open you the door to plenty of other international conferences as well.

The first steps to the AIESEC academy

The air was filled with excitement. Not even the hidden location or the rain could have stopped our members from joining the LCM. A lot of great things were promised and they were about to be kept.
After the promotion of our upcoming Alumni Event(information will follow) and the enthusiastic presentation of how cool it is to be an OCP Career Days, the time had come for our special guest:

Dejan Tesnjak from Aperion Global

He had a little workshop prepared about Intercultural Business Communication. All of us had experienced different cultures and how quickly misunderstandings occur. So you could see on peoples faces, that they were fascinated. I knew I was.
Although we had only an hours time, we learned much: how we are shaped by our culture, what the attempt to understand other cultures actually means or about the five different patterns of work behaviour. These are just extracts of what I thought should be mentioned, but everyone learned his own lesson that day.
The presentation had the right balance between seriosity and relaxed atmosphere. If there is something to criticize then the fact, that it was too short. But I'm sure, that we will have another opportunity to make up for that.
By the way, the Power Point Presentation is uploaded on our community.

This was a big step toward the idea of an AIESEC academy, where we deepen the collaboration with companies, NGOs and such. I'm proud that we got this thing going. I hope that this LCM was just the first of its kind and that many will follow in the future.

Thanks to Dejan Tesnjak for challenging our world views and last but not least for the two books(Working Globe Smart- 12 People Skills for doing business across borders and Global Diversity- Winning Customers and engaging employees within world markets; both by Gundling, Ernest) we received as a gift. They are now part of our office library. So go and check them out!

Thanks to the members that joined the LCM for your motivation and interest. You gave great inputs during the session. I also got the feedback, that we were a great group to work with.

Thanks to the trainees that joined the LCM for your commitment. We are lucky to have you here and to benefit from your experiences.

As you remember I promoted the city tours heavily during the last LCMs and finally the first one will take place- in BERNE!

It's a great opportunity to get to know the people from other LCs better, meet up with Interns, enjoy yourselves and last but not least have an interesting tour through one of Switzerland beautiful cities.

ASIA WORKSHOP

The ASIA WORKSHOP began with a very interesting presentation of the honorable abbot Phrathepkittimoli from Wat Thai. The abbot talked about the meaning of buddhism in general and during the second part of his speech about the influence of Buddhism in daily business life. He highlighted the strong relatedness between buddhistic beliefs and ethic business standards. The abbot brought out one point very clear: To be successful in business it is necessary to respect high ethic standards to enable powerful cooperations and faire trade prices. Therefore Successful business means success for all participants.

After refreshing drinks the second presentation with UBS started. The presenters demonstrated in a very eloquent and interesting way the important factors of wealthmanagement in Asia Pacific. They highlighted the enormous growth potential and discussed different demand and supply factors of growth, as well as the opportunity to keep a strong growth momentum. After discussing different environments and client needs the UBS Presentation was finished by the introduction of the UBS Graduate Training Program. Open questions were then discussed at the asian buffet. Working for UBS in Asia seems to be very exciting!

The presentation of ABB began with a field report of a trainee, who was on an internship in China. The trainee talked about his positive and negative experiences in Chinese business and social life. This part was followed by the introduction of the long ABB business development in China (they started their first office in 1974). Then the presenter talked about “guanxi”, the importance of personal relationships in asian business life. He pointed out that there are certain rules to keep in mind while participating at a business meeting. Hence these rules only the chief of each party is allowed to speak. All the others should be quiet until they are asked to talk. Another important rule to remember is where to sit. The higher the grade the more far away from the door one should be sitting. A very interesting presentation, that raised a lot of questions. These were then discussed at the spring-roll buffet.

The last presentation was held by Miss Tang, who is an expert for cultural sensitivity and intercultural communication. She showed the cultural differences between Chinese and European people and how they can easily lead to misunderstandings. She highlighted that a Chinese person is a lot more polite. Therefore she would for example refuse the acceptance of a gift at first, although she likes the present. It is therefore important to insist in handing over the present. Afterwards the different meanings of a “smile” and different ways of saying “no”, without using the word, were discussed. At nine o clock the ASIA Workshop ended with the last opportunity to eat the delicious spring-rolls.

During the breaks between the different presentations the AIESEC Team was promoting the possible traineeships in ASIA. They did a great job! They recruited a lot of potential candidates!

The ASIA WORKSHOP was great!! Interesting presentations, great diversity of presenters, great team work and delicious food!!!

While the LCs activities are reduced to learning for exams, (Birthday) parties and holidays for the next 3 weeks, this doesn't keep the interns off from coming to Zurich!

At 8.25 tomorrow (17.06.07) morning Lana from St. Petersburg will arrive at Zurich Airport for an oneyear internship at Kraft Foods. We will meet there at 8.15 to welcome her. Whoever can't make it that early, can join us in her new home in Seebach for the welcome/birthday-breakfast!!...indeed, she turns 22 today!! Afterwards there is still the whole day to continue learning, sleeping or whatever...:-P

Today we made the very last arrangements for Lana's room: screwing her bed together, getting bedclothes and a wardrobe, etc. At this point we want to thank Marcel's dad and our trainee Christop for volunteering!!!

As there are even more trainees coming - 2 in the next 1.5 weeks -, we need to get their newly rented flats furnished and equipped with the usual housewares asap. So if you have any furniture, please email our LCP (marcel.sprecher@zh.aiesec.ch), if you have any other stuff, which is needed for livinig, please bring it to the office and leave it in front of the door. Asia: The NLE

After a lot of effort from the members of the Asia pbox the day had finally arrived... 6.6.07!
You could see a lot of excited people running around, organizing the last things.
There was a broad programme from Buddhism in business over presentations by UBS and ABB to an expert on intercultural communication. It even attracted some AIESECers from far away- like Bern or Lugano. : )
What was it like?

A little summary from Denis:

"My first task was to design the web-presentation which turned out to be very difficult because the server-system never did what I wanted. But at the end I managed it somehow. As the lecturers had already been invited, some people did the marketing material and others again had to organize the catering.

After a few weeks the event was coming closer and we heard bad news: no money for the catering. So we had to find another way to provide some food. We decided to meet at a cave which some people call the “Aiesec-flat”. We were over ten people and managed to cook almost 250 spring rolls. It was surprising to see how people worked so well as a team although many of them didn’t know each other. I think it is related to the philosophy of Aiesec which we all share: “It is up to you. The more you give, the more you get”.

Finally, on the 6^th of June, the event took place. I got the chance to “take care” of our lecturers: a Buddhist monk, a wealth manager from the UBS, a project manager from the ABB and an intercultural communication teacher. There were almost 100 people listening to them and drawing a conclusion from the reactions of the audience the event was a full success.

At the moment Im really thankfull to our EB for the coaching and for giving us the opportunity to develop our skills in such events and I’m looking forward for organizing my own event in future."

I believe that it was a successful event thanks to the hard work from our members, especially the Asia pbox. You guys did great. Special thanks to Helen and her sister for frying the spring rolls the whole day! They were absolutely delicious.

Within the ASIA PBoX event quite a few members got together in the Saturday afternoon. Their goal: to prepare 400 (!!!) springrolls.

Read some words from Helen, responsible for catering:
"400 springrolls were considered to be made for the Asia Event on the 6. of June. That was the plan. Not planned was the RC-kitchen lacking pans, dishes and other equipment. Also unexpected - the chaos! Thanks to the energetic help of Denis in the kitchen (pure stress!) and the rest of the great team outside, which was rolling the 400 springrolls, the work was accomplishe. 400? Oh no, a few fell victim to the appetite and suddenly the raw springroll disappeared in the mouth. If someone had an upset stomach, it was definetely caused by the raw springroll."

and a short statement from Nicolas, the OCP:
The balcony of the trainee flat (Bederstrasse 94) is absolutely convenient for doing spring-rolls. Therefore about 10 AIESECers were trying to roll up the nicely prepared vegetables into the asian dough, which actually wasn`t very simple due to the "special" sound produced by radio Zürisee, annoying everyone sitting in it`s range of coverage. Because of the sommerly temperatures we even had to create a special humidification system to prevent the dough from drying out. Christoph was the chief operator of our special system and did a great job. And if the system failed (happened a few times) the totally dry and broken asian dough was eaten by Jenni (who even smiled while doing so!!!). Special thanks goes to Julio and Jenni, who showed me how to do the spring rolls- so that in the end of the construction process- you could look at them and say: "yes it looks like a spring roll and I am not afraid of eating it". Thanks to Jih-Ming for creating some huge spring rolls that had to be eaten directly due to quality control. Thanks to Markus, who actually has the talent to create asian rolls I allways wanted. Thanks to the beautiful girls at the table who redirected my senses away from the "special" music. And last but not least a great compliment to the citchen crew (Helen & Denis) who did a fantastic job. And thank you Trainees for hosting this event! It`s great to have you here!!"

Impressions from KICK-OFF 07

In my humble opinion Zürich rocked the conference and I don't only mean because of the awards we won(congratulations to all the guys again! awesome!).
Even more because of the great Newies that were with us, the motivated Teamees, the two coolest Interns and the committed EB members and Goldies.
This picture is just one of many that proves, that we were the best party delegates and also best dressed! I don't believe that there was any other LC as comitted to the Dressing up as we were. : )

I also would like to thank all the people that got up and were actively involved in sessions even though they were partying hard at night. RESPECT!!!

To really get an overview of KICK-OFF, we have to hear a little bit about all tracks. That's exactly what we're gonna do. Lean back and enjoy!

"The Kick-off was a very impressive experience for me. I had the chance to meet different people from different countries and different cultures. My homegroup was the best ever! The food was also very good and tasty...and i was very satisfied with the organisation.
I learned a lot about the structure of AIESEC and enlarged my knowledge in various themes. It was very interesting to see the informal atmosphere. Except for the last one the parties were cool. Just one word...great!!!"(Sinem)

"I thought I was well prepared for the @XP at KICK OFF. But I was wrong. It wasn't just the dances performed with enthusiasm or the shouting for identification, which we already had been warned about.
Even more it was the 3 hours sleep, that got back to me saturday, the amount of information through workshops or power point presentations, the various other mes you were confronted with during the parties and millions of names you had to remember with the right face to it...
Did I like it? Hell yeah! Anytime again!"(Moni)

Teamee:
"In the Teamee-Track, we deepened our knowledge about the creation of a PBoX. We were few delegates in our homegroup, but therefore mostly guys with high potential. Almost everyone had gathered some unique experiences which were really worth sharing!
As everyone else, we had the workshops with the externals. I must say, it was one of the most interesting parts. Especially the "project management" wich was presented by an @Alumni. So we really had the link between the topic and the @work.
One of the best sessions I had during this conference was the mentoring session. We learned what mentoring is about and I had some really cool discussions with my mentor...
Sunday morning was a selling session which was really funny because our faci (he played the business guy) tried to be as negative as possible and in the end, we had his commitment to produce our new LC T-Shirts! (maybe I should write him an email and remind him about it... ;) )" (Philip)

"I was in Fiesch just for two days but enjoyed it so much. Not only are the Alps amazing (it's been the first time for me to see them) but I was pleased to finally get to know you guys from the LC, have some interesting chats on AIESEC topics and party with you! I hope to see you soon and engage in LC activities. Last not least, I was really impressed by the number of recognitions you received on the conference. Keep the good track!" (Mateusz)

"This year's Kick-Off was my 4th big national conference and it was the best so far. There are many reasons for that. First of all, the Zurich delegation rocked the house like it never did before! ;). Second, the more people you know, the more people you talk to, the more open minded you take part at a conference, the better it will end up. I had so many interesting conversations during that conference, on personal level as well as in terms of how to improve our LC and AIESEC in general. I hope that every delegate from Zurich had a similar experience!" (Marcel, LCP)

"I already participated in a lot conferences during my 3 AIESEC years but none of them before as an EBmember. So KO 07 was for me: - more work - more action - more adrenalin involved - even more group pressure not to fall asleep during sessions - more dancing in the front at Roll Calls - more leading by example concerning weird party dresses - more intensive networking - summarized: BIGGER MOTIVATION KICK THAN EVER! I really have loads of ideas and energy to put them into action. And when I look at our great Newies (not great in numbers, but in potential) this time I guess it will be easy to do so"(Seba, VPER)

KICK-OFF 10.5.-13.5.07

Spring is already there, summer's crawling up and with it comes KICK- OFF! It will take place in Fiesch, Wallis, sourrounded by beautiful mountains...

Now some brief information about the conference itself: there will be 4 tracks(newie, teamee, leader and goldie) the first two days. the last two days there will be 2 more tracks added(interns and returnees). you see, there's one for all of you. : )
If you might not be able to be there the whole time, it's not a problem. if you can stay for example only for two days, that's fine, too.

There are many interesting workshops as well, with topics such as education, innovation or finance!

last but not least there are great parties to look forward: first global village, then "the other me"(really cool, one request: be more inventive than just to choose like the opposite sex-you!), and last time machine- wohoo.

As you see there are so many good reasons to attend!

Clean your office sunday

Although we were just a little bunch of cleaning maniacs who spent nearly the whole day of this sunny sunday in the office we reached our goal: Our beloved office can be used to do proper AIESEC work again. We removed tons of trash, discovered leaflets from 15 years ago, hoovered and wiped the whole floor, installed a new telephone and rebooted the office network so we can use internet, the printer and the scanner again.

Careerdays 2007

The Career Days Zurich 2007 are history! The last week and especially the fair on tuesday were the end of an experience some incredible individuals made together since october 2006. For me personally it was the most intense experience in AIESEC I made so far, with a lot of pressure (financial survival of the LC, demanding companies, etc.), stress, but also a lot of fun and maaaany many things I learned in terms of Leadership, hard and soft skills.

POCKET KILLER DAY

Hi everybody!

At the last "Killer-Day" vs. Austria AIESEC Switzerland was ahead by a nose!!! S.a. http://oneyearinbern.blogspot.com/. Unfortunately Zürich couldnt contribute its share. :o( This time everything is different!

Luckily Zürich doesn't have to complain about TN-Raising, though the SN side looks not that bright! In short, we decided to boost them with a

Wednesday 25. of April 2007, 8.30AM to 17.30PM

During the whole day there will be an X-information-stand in the main building of the University, where at least one EB member will be present. At the stand are posters advertising X, brochures of AIESEC, Insight access to sample with the most up to date TNs and a ranking list of all members' recruited students. It's kind of a competition about recruiting as much students, who will attend the public LCM the same evening and are interested in a short term membership for going on X, as possible!

Our aspiration is: 24 interested students and finally at least 4 SNs.

PRICES:

1# member in recruiting will be honored in an LCM and wins a cinema voucher!

In case LC Zürich reaches its goal, the whole LC will go on a shipping on the lake of Zürich during the sommer holidays!!!!

LC Meetings

Hey everyone!

During the transition weekend (blog entry about it will follow, no worries ;)), the EB came to the conlusion that the way we were doing LCM during the second half of the last term was not ideal. They were held and announced rather spontaneously and the content consisted more or less of updates and job allocation. For our term, we will change the concept of the meetings. LCMs should foster the AIESEC spirit, should knit the members together, motivate & inspire!

Still, it is important that everyone knows about what is going on in the LC, but for this information, other means of communication are better. From now on, updates will be posted regularly on the blog and through the yahoo-group. But that also requires that every member visits the blog at least once a week ;)

As for the LCMs: On the right sidebar, you see the dates for all the upcoming LCMs until the beginning of the next semester. The first LCM will be the first one with all the new members. That means there will be an induction session about AIESEC Identity, PBoXs, projects we're running in Zurich, Kick-Off etc. Afterwards, there will be sort of a global village with the trainees. How this will look like depends on the location. We still need to find an alternative to our office, because obviously, there is not enough space ;).

Anyway, the second LCM will be around Kick-Off preparation. Our "Roll-call and Shout" -Task force consisting of Jelena and Jennifer + anyone who'd like to take part will present their ideas ;)

Overall, the idea is to have at least one "highlight" in every LCM. That could be country presentations by trainees, workshops with externals (Jelena's cousin for example is sort of a professional cultural sensitivity trainer and he agreed to do a workshop at one of our LCMs, preferably on the 11th of july). LC Geneva in Zurich

Today, 15 ppl from Geneva including 5 EB generations came to Zurich for a dinner with us. Crazy :D Really cool to see the new EBs starting the bonding process :)

LC Geneva will have transition days starting tomorrow. We wish you two amazing days, don't waste too much time in the sauna ;)

3 TNs raised within one day! (ok, I'm still waiting for one TN-form, but anyway...). The only problem: two of them NEED to be matched within like 2 weeks so that they can start at the beginning of April...quite a challenge, I hope it's possible. We'll see.
